June, 2010: If you've driven, walked, or bicycled down Jackson Avenue
recently, you've likely noticed some new utility poles positioned in odd places.
What you are witnessing is the first phase of a roadway improvement program that
will address several safety and traffic flow issues that have plagued Jackson
Avenue for many decades.
Presently, LIPA and Verizon are relocating their lines to accommodate the
widening and re-routing of Jackson Avenue at several critical points. This
is in anticipation of a late summer groundbreaking for the actual construction
work.
The Syosset Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to doing whatever it can to
minimize the impact of this construction on businesses in the downtown area and
the residents who shop here. Accordingly, we will be liaising with the
Department of Transportation for construction and road closing updates and with
elected officials who can provide useful information about the status of the
project.
As of the present time, the engineers of the project do not anticipate having to
close Jackson Avenue entirely at any time during construction. Please
check back for further updates.
